“We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. However, the people who dwell in the land are strong and the cities are fortified and very large … We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are … The land through which we have gone to spy is a land that devours its inhabitants and all the people we saw in it are of great height … We seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”
Ten of the 12 leaders sent to spy out the Promised Land returned with a hopelessly negative report.
And as they gave their report, the hearts of the people sank; the confidence of Israel melted away like wax before a flame.
Is it any wonder that God told those 10 negative spies they would have no future in the Promised Land?
If you are in any kind of leadership it is your responsibility to instill confidence in people.
Are you a Prime Minister? Are you a sports coach? Are you a parent? You are responsible to help people have confidence – confidence in themselves, in the group they are part of, in the task they are called to.
The Latin word from which we get the English word “confidence” literally means, “to have faith together”.
A leader will always help people to have faith together in what God has called us to do.
